Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Generated Content

Authors, editors and reviewers are required to disclose and appropriately manage the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in relation to manuscripts submitted to JAFES. This policy applies to all stages of the publication process, including manuscript preparation, peer review, and editorial decision-making.

Use by Authors

Authors are required to disclose their use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies for all submissions to JAFES. This shall be described in the cover letter AND the submitted work in the appropriate section as to how it was used.

Authors are expected to exercise due diligence in reviewing, editing, and finalizing the output arising from use of such technologies, to include ensuring that there is appropriate attribution of all quoted material, including full citations.

Use of AI for data collection, analysis, or figure generation

The use of AI/AI-assisted technologies for data collection, analysis, or figure generation shall be described in sufficient detail as part of the Methodology.

Use of AI for manuscript preparation

A statement reflecting the use of AI/AI-assisted technologies shall be included as part of the Acknowledgments.

Example statement:

Acknowledgments

The author(s) used [NAME OF TOOL/SERVICE] to [OBJECTIVE OF USING AI/AI-ASSISTED TECHNOLOGY] and have duly overseen, reviewed, edited, and finalized the content.

Use by Reviewers

Reviewers are expected to uphold the confidentiality and integrity of the peer review process. Manuscripts under review, as well as associated review materials, should be handled as confidential documents and reviewed independently by the reviewer.

To preserve author privacy, intellectual property, and the integrity of peer review, reviewers are expected to conduct their assessment without uploading manuscripts or review content into generative AI tools or external systems that process or store confidential content.

Use by Editors

Editors may use AI-assisted tools only for limited administrative or technical purposes (e.g., similarity checking, language support, or workflow assistance) and must ensure that editorial judgment, confidentiality, and decision-making remain entirely human-led. Manuscripts under consideration must not be input into generative AI systems in a way that exposes confidential or unpublished content.
