This lecture aims to discuss the emerging ethical issues in the use of AI in scientific publications, intending to give both the perspectives of authors and publishers. It will touch on how AI especially those that use Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, can be used by non-native English-speaking authors in manuscript development especially after it has been written, to improve grammar and writing style. On the other hand, AI can be used to fabricate data, to write entire papers using non-existent subjects or experiments, or can taint the integrity of the entire research process by inventing erroneous analysis. This talk will discuss the editorial policy of JAFES and other journals in the use of AI for writing scientific papers and will elaborate on the updated International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations (Updated January 2024) specifically focusing on the use of AI.
